  1. Cable you've made my point. Mixed media is so much more ALIVE than oil on canvas. These Protean Flow 2 pieces are goofy-elegant. I hope to see them in person some day! Also: CONGRATULATIONS on the grant.

  2. Molly, thanks for your comment. Though I don't share your sweeping generalization of the limitations of oil on canvas, I certainly see you point in comparing my mixed media drawings with the recent oil painting. The physical diversity of using different media together is difficult to emulate in oil painting, though not impossible. I learn so much from these drawings that I aim to bring to the paintings. There is a sensuality to oil paint, both in body, surface, and color that I have rarely seen matched, no matter how many different materials one throws together. An oil painting surely has its own language and terms that one should respond to when choosing it over another medium. As does acrylic. Varying the media leads to varying modes of making and therefore varying ideas of possibility and resolution. I hope to be able make an oil painting one day that has more life and diversity than these drawings, using the full range of what oil paint can do. Having said all this, I do not believe one medium to be superior to another. To me, it's just how one uses or surpasses the medium's inherent limitations. Much more work to be done!
